The Fleet Engineer reports to the Fleet Engineering Supervisor and provides engineering expertise for the projects and activities related to fleet management.
· Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment assigned to departments.
· Implements and monitors a preventative maintenance program to assure cost effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturers specifications.
· Maintains a complete inventory system through recording of all expenditures and income of each vehicle, maintenance equipment, fuel, repair parts, supplies, etc.
· Monitors user departments by analysis of vehicle and equipment utilization and evaluation of equipment specifications.
· Implements and maintains a mechanic training and certification program to provide needed technical skills for mechanics in repair of automobiles and heavy equipment.
· Welds; replaces parts; repairs parts; repairs electrical systems; diagnoses vehicles for minor body and fender work; performs tune ups and engine overhauls; troubleshoots problems when needed.
Create departmental and fleet expense and capital budgets, to submit for approval to management. Track performance versus forecast on a monthly (or other) basis.
Analyze and determine what vehicles to purchase/lease, and how they are to be equipped.
Create/update fleet policy and procedures, to include vehicle assignment, personal use, replacement policy, accident reporting process, and other procedures.
Manage or perform regular lease vs. purchase analysis in concert with corporate finance/treasury departments.
Chair company safety committee, determine chargeability of all accidents, and execute company fleet policy when action is required.
Report fleet expense performance regularly to management, including an annual report when submitting the coming year’s budget.
Manage, assign, and track use of pool vehicles as required.
· The Fleet Engineer undertakes projects that involve:
v engineering research, development and design
v engineering analysis and projections
v material and maintenance product assessment
