Role Overview
The Managing Director (MD) for Southern & Eastern Mediterranean Region (SEMED) is responsible for the Bank's overall activities and presence in the region. This comprises the formulation and delivery of the Bank's strategy and business plan for the region, including investment and policy dialogue activities, high level interaction with external and internal stakeholders and the motivation and leadership of a significant team based in four offices on the ground.
The MD will lead one of the five geographic business groups reporting to the Managing Director, Countries of Operations. The MD will oversee activities in four countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. In due course, the Bank also expects to be active in Lebanon and the West Bank and Gaza, which would become part of the SEMED region.
The preferred location for this role is the EBRD Cairo Resident office, however, London HQ could be considered depending on the successful candidate's circumstances. This is a regular contract and the appointment to this position is envisaged to be for a period of up to 5 years.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
•Define, in consultation with external and internal stakeholders and in agreement with the Sector MDs, other Bank's internal departments and Bank's executive management, the strategic business direction of the Bank with respect to operations, policy and transition impact objectives for the SEMED region and also the strategy for every country individually.
•Develop and continuously manage the delivery of strategy, encompassing all relevant business areas of the SEMED region. Coordinate and manage activities across the Group according to respective country strategies, monitoring accomplishments and outcomes and advising the Sector MDs, other Bank's internal departments and Bank's executive management on key strategic matters and developments. Engagement with Board members to ensure their continued understanding and support for the Bank's investment and policy activities in the countries.
•Provide business leadership, ensuring the origination, execution and implementation of investment projects and operations in the SEMED countries in all sectors, in line with the agreed annual business plan, fulfilling EBRD standards, operational principles, policy objectives and transition mandate.
•Lead policy reform dialogue with governments and other relevant stakeholders with respect to transition and investment climate issues across the SEMED region. Actively engage in policy dialogue strategic formulation and its effective implementation and, in collaboration with the MD, Countries of Operations, work to establish close engagement and coordinated planning and delivery with the Policy and Partnerships Vice-Presidency on the EBRD's stepped up engagement in policy reform.
•Provide high level problem solving in relationship with local authorities, stakeholders and clients in implementation of the Bank's investment and policy mandate in the region.
•Promote product innovation and development across teams to anticipate/respond to market and transition requirements.
•Oversee the growing portfolio of loans and investments with a view to building and protecting revenue-earning assets. Guarantee and oversee the Business Group's full compliance with the Bank's integrity procedures.
•Represent the Bank and support the Country Heads, the Sector MDs, other Bank's internal departments and Bank's executive management in high-level business and institutional relationships with the business community, political leaders at central and local level as well as senior officials of multilateral institutions and other public or private bodies.
