Purpose :
Under minimal supervision, the conventional machinist is to set up and operate a variety of conventional metal working machines such as lathe, milling, grinding, drilling machines to machine raw or semi-finished parts or components to finished parts as per blueprint.
He should be knowledgeable, skilled, experienced and trained technically to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
• Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and any specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations to machine metallic and/or non-metallic parts to drawing specifications.
• Properly and safely selects, aligns, secures and removes holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
• Read, interpret and understand requirements in blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications.
• Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, shapers, or grinders.
• Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
• Knowledgeable in the use of precision instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, thread gauges etc.
• Understand and use calculations to set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut.
• Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to machine components, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
• Maintain machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
• Ability to trouble shoot any non-conformances, to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls to correct errors.
• Confer with engineering, supervisory, quality and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information.
• Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment
• Perform related job as assigned by management.
