Asmae is a French international solidarity NGO specialized in child development. Independent, non-religious and non-political, it is open to everyone.
Created in 1980 by Sister Emmanuelle following her experience with scavengers in Egypt’s slums, Asmae keeps on respecting its founder’s values and methods: listening and proximity, pragmatism, respect of the differences, professionalism and reciprocity.
Asmae’s action aims to support vulnerable children and their families through providing tailor-made and long lasting support to local stakeholders working on child education and protection.
Its vision, “A fair world which guarantees that children can live and grow with dignity within their environment, to become free women and men who contribute to society”, is broken down into four missions:
o Stimulate child development through a global approach. To do this, Asmae also works on family support by taking their environment into account;
o Build the capacity of local stakeholders involved in child development, boost cooperation amongst them and maximize their social impact;
o Stand up for children by raising awareness and advocating;
o Experiment, disseminate and share practices.
Nowadays Asmae supports education and protection projects through 64 local organizations in Burkina-Faso, Egypt, France, India, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali and Philippines. Furthermore, in France, Asmae also directly manages a mother and childcare center.
• Asmae in Egypt background :
Asmae is registered under the Ministry of Solidarity since May 2015. Asmae develops programs on prevention of school dropout and support to children with special needs. Asmae currently support eight Egyptian associations working in informal areas of Greater Cairo, in Alexandria and Arment (Luxor governorate). Asmae Egypt’ team is based in Cairo with four persons (two translators/interpreters, one Coordination assistant and one Coordinator).
Within the program “Support to children with Special needs”, Asmae supports three Egyptian associations including Basmat Amal Association, funded in 2000, by six families of poly-handicapped children. Their target was to promote access to adapt and quality services centers for children with special needs (disabilities). Asmae has been supporting Basmat Amal since 2009. Asmae provides technical and financial support to three centers of rehabilitation of children with special needs.
Basmat Amal works in four fields of intervention:
- Support to children with disabilities, in day centers, where they provide individual and collective sessions of psychomotricity, speech therapy and academic learning.
- Children with special needs who can be enrolled in schools follow a part time program: three days at the center and two days at the school. Regarding a protocol with the Ministry of Education, Basmat Amal trains teaches of inclusive schools, equips the resources classrooms and follow up on trained teachers.
- Basmat Amal supports parents of children with special needs in following up their children and working for a better integration of children in their families.
- Finally, Basmat Amal cooperates with Egyptian Authorities (Ministries of Education, Solidarity ad Health)
2. MISSION:
To contribute to the design and the implementation of Asmae’s program « support to children with special needs » in Egypt.
3. OBJECTIVES :
3.1 To support Basmat Amal’s operational team to define, to build, to implement and to evaluate/monitor the rehabilitation program of children with special needs:
• To strengthen knowledge of Basmat Amal’s members in handicap (definition, strategies, policies, etc.),
• To support the partner to improve the individual rehabilitation program,
• To perform a diagnosis of Basmat Amal’s capacities in supporting children with special needs, with a focus on specialized education,
• To design, with the partner, modules of training on topics identified in the operational diagnosis, with a focus on specialized education,
• To train Basmat Amal’s team on the identified topics,
• To support technical team to implement trainings of specialized education,
• To provide Basmat Amal with training material.
3.2 To contribute to the development of tools, material and to the strategy of intervention in field of specialized education:
• Based on Basmat Amal diagnosis, to identify and design tools and pedagogical material for specialized education activities,
• To work with Basmat Amal team in implementing tools and material of specialized education,
• To contribute in designing strategy for specialized education (public schools, specialized classrooms, etc.) with Basmat Amal and Asmae Country Coordinator.
3.3 To participate in the designing and implementation of Asmae’s program « support to children with special needs »:
• To prepare and facilitate workshops for experiences’ exchanges between Asmae’s partners,
• To participate to national network on education and protection,
• To work the Technical Adviser Children’s development on common topics (such as child’s development, child’s psychology, learning difficulties, etc.),
• To contribute to the field study in Upper Egypt,
• To participate to the office and team activities,
• To submit a monthly report to the Country Coordinator,
• To submit a report at the end of the mission to the Country Coordinator.
