The Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation is a non-profit academic organisation that was founded to support and advance the protection, preservation and study of Islamic intellectual and artistic heritage. It specialises in scholarly publishing, fine book design, and the care and management of manuscript collections. The Foundation has offices in Cairo, Egypt; the University of Cambridge, England; and Stuttgart, Germany.
The Foundation has signed an agreement with the National Library of Egypt (Dar al-Kutub) and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture to assist with the preservation, conservation and curatorship of the National Library’s manuscript collection and to work with the National Library to establish it as a regional leader in collection care and management. The National Library possesses around 60,000 manuscript titles—the largest manuscript collection in the Arab World and one of the most important collections of Islamic manuscripts worldwide.
The goals of the project include re-designing and re-equipping the National Library’s two existing preservation and conservation laboratories, including imaging facilities; designing and equipping a new conservation laboratory; redesigning and re-equipping the manuscript storage and exhibition areas; the continued professional development of the Library’s preservation, conservation and exhibitions staff; cataloguing selected areas of the collection; and preparing publications and promotional materials for and about the National Library.
Position Summary
The TIF-DAK Manuscript Project is seeking to fill a full-time Translator-Arabic editor (English -Arabic) at the Project’s office in Cairo, Egypt. The Translator-Arabic editor will be expected to translate scientific books on library and museum environment, Islamic codicology and disciplines related to the care and management of manuscript collection.
The contract is for one year. Employment in Cairo will be through the Foundation’s representative company Tradigital, which is based in Cairo, Egypt.
Salary and benefits
Salary: 6300 le
Probation: 3 months
Working hours: Sunday-Thursday, 40 hours/week
Annual leave: 30 days plus Egyptian public holidays
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Translation (English to Arabic, occasionally Arabic to English) of the following types of texts, which will be used on the Foundation’s website as well as shared with the Project’s partner institutions:
1. Books and articles on the care and management of manuscript collections, museum captions, pamphlets and publicity materials.
2. Studies and research commissioned and published by the Project relating to manuscript collection care and management.
3. Project reports and formal correspondence.
• Translation assistance to other staff of the Project, if needed.
Additionally, the Translator may be called on to support other projects of the Foundation as needed. Willingness and availability to travel is an advantage.
