The World Food Programme activities include food assistance for nutrition, livelihoods, relief and emergency school feeding, while also supporting humanitarian air and logistics services, food security coordination and infrastructure rehabilitation projects, also Based on an official request from the Government of Egypt, WFP is providing food assistance to Syrian refugees residing in the greater Cairo area, Alexandria and Damietta through a voucher programme. This position is open to qualified Egyptian candidates.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Head of Procurement unit at the Egypt Country Office;
- Establish and maintain collaboration with the Food safety and quality & Nutrition units at Regional Bureau and Headquarters for corporate guidance;
- In the event of food safety incidents, support investigation exercises to enable lessons learned to be documented and shared, to reduce re-occurrence of the incident;
- Provide technical advice and guidance to Country Office in areas of food fortification, shelf-life studies, improved production process and development of fortified complementary foods;
- Liaise with inspection companies for daily and regular reporting and following up with incidents during inspections and regarding sample testing and lab analysis;
- Keep abreast of latest food technology issues, food specifications, new food product development at the local research projects;
- Provide advice on food quality assurance and management issues to prevent losses and improve commodity management capacity in Country Office (CO) (i.e. situation analysis, sampling, food analysis, lab results interpretation, etc.);
- Provide advice and monitor the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) in the different production facilities of register suppliers;
- Monitoring and establish a collaboration with laboratories in order to improve test methods for analysis of humanitarian food aid commodities, such as dry commodities, and also processed foods such as biscuits, and fortified blended foods;
- Support project teams on the food technology aspects of food assistance programs, ensuring compliance with WFP food and safety regulations;
- Prepare regular country briefs on food fortification and local production of fortified complementary foods documenting status of ongoing projects, gaps and key challenges, opportunities;
- Review and provide advice on the procedures for mitigating and documenting food quality and safety issues through the supply chain;
Participate in the technical review of services provided by external contractors;
- Conduct feasibility studies that will be used to justify industrial investments for the production of foods appropriate for the humanitarian context;
- Support the capacity building of WFP staff as well as local authorities, suppliers and inspection companies by develop training modules on food technology issues, food quality control, loss prevention and mitigation;
- Contribute to preparedness actions such as early warning, risk analysis and contingency planning and make necessary recommendations in the area of responsibility;
- Periodically monitor the management of risks and report on any actions taken;
- Undertake frequent duty travel to governorates in the country as needed;
- Perform other duties as required.
